It's that time of the year! Pig buying time! You want one of these this year! We started with Tamworth, they're known for the quality of their meat and are the breed used in most of your expensive restaurants. They're docile, friendly, and wonderful mothers. We wound up with a KuneKune/Potbelly cross who bred one of our girls. Holy cow, it was THE BEST pork ever, which is insane because the pure Tamworth was amazing. The KuneKune are smaller and we discovered that not only was the meat incredible, the combo made for a really nice midrange pig. KuneKune alone, tend to be small, Tamworth, big! The medium size also made it easier to contain... we free range on 100 acres, but the big pigs still managed to get into stuff... fencing... goat shelters, etc.. and their size meant destruction! I think the best thing is that the cross forages, but also grazes. Tamworth are big on rooting! KuneKune are grazers! These pigs do both so, we don't have moonscapes from the rooting, but they do get a full nutrition package between the two, which cuts down on feed costs considerably.
